Breaking With the Law: the book series
I’ve been in law enforcement for 29 years. I think many of
us get to a point where we are burned out with the justice system
cycle—chasing criminals, piecing together evidence, testifying
in trials, incarcerating, etc. These reactive, post-incident areas
of law enforcement will never completely go away, but I started
to wonder what would happen if I switched my focus a bit—played
with the rules, so to speak.
So I tried a few things, here and there, that were completely proactive,
preventive activities. In the policing environment, it wasn’t
easy. At times I received a lot of criticism internally and externally.
But I also had partners who joined me and believed in what I was
doing. The results were amazing. In some cases, simply unbelievable.
As I speak and present at various conferences and share my stories,
I get requests from many different people for more information.
Breaking With the Law is a series of books that document my experiences
with an inspiring leadership style that introduced proactive initiatives.
Putting into play..."If it's predictable, then it's preventable".

Get Your Ship Together - Michael Abrashoff
Abrashoff knew there were many other creative but unsung leaders
throughout the business world who could teach people new ways to
motivate, inspire, and get great results under the pressure found
in the business world today. He found some amazing team builders
and interviewed them for his latest book, Get Your Ship Together.
The sixth and last person Abrashoff interviewed was Ward Clapham
is an Officer in the Royal Canadian Mounted Police. Ward was the
Canadian expert on Community Policing and could be described as
“speaking softly and carrying a big hockey stick”. He
works constantly to change the Mounties’ way of life. The
lessons learned were:
• Play by the rules – usually
• Mutual respect is vital to team success
• Use informal leaders to help protect your flank
• Reach out to strengthen your team
• Challenge yourself, and grow
• Start small, and build from there
• Throw problems back to your people
• Help your team members grow
• Solve the real problem
• Look after your people first
• To lead your team, be a part of it
• Stay focused on the real goal
• Show people that you care
• Never put down your people
• Stay close to your people
• When you know you’re right, stick to your guns
• Don’t just accept change. Create it.
